Grote Hoeve is a large farm complex with no less than fourteen buildings. The farm was built in 1880 along the lines of monastic architecture: long buildings that surround a large, rectangular courtyard with a pond in the middle. The buildings were designed by Victor Besme, city architect under Leopold II.

In 1999, this special architecture was declared a protected monument by the Flemish government. Step by step, Grote Hoeve was carefully restored. The buildings were granted new life as a visitor centre, brasserie, bicycle rental point, and hotel.

Swinery:

Here you will find Visitor Centre Colony 5-7. More information.

Woonstalhuis Zuid:

This is where you find the brasserie Veldkeuken.

Open Hooischuren:

These open barns were used to store hay or straw. After restoration, the barns now form an ideal location for summer events and parties. More information.

Outbuildings of the potato cellars:

Here, local sports associations can shower and change. In this building, there are also public toilets.

Other buildings:

The other buildings of Grote Hoeve, such as the stables, cowshed and Woonstalhuis Noord, are not yet accessible. In a few years, all the buildings will be restored and each will house a new function. The potato cellars and the quarantine stable down the way, where newly purchased animals were first isolated for 40 days, will also receive a new function once they have been restored.
